Requested apartment: With Caesar Zepelli, please!
Character Name: Joseph Joestar, also known as Jojo
Canon: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Canon Point: Part 3: Stardust Crusaders, before the team boards the submarine to Egypt
Background/History: Joseph Joestar's History at the JoJo Wikia
Personality:
To begin with, it's necessary to summarise Joseph's character from the previous part - Part 2: Battle Tendency. Joseph was the main protagonist of Battle Tendency and we get an account of him at the age of 18.
We see that Joseph at age 18 is hot headed and doesn't think too much about what he says before it leaves his mouth. And he has quite the mouth on him - insulting and sassing friends, foes and everyone in between. He's quick witted and sharp tongued, always having something to say no matter what the situation is. But he also has a sense of humour. Joseph is also good at bluffing, and usually these bluffs play well for him. Except when they don't, and he's got a month to live after being "engaged" to two super-human beings.
He's able to scheme very quickly, able to look at his situation and find a way to either win or get out of it quickly. Even when the odds are against him, he shows the Joestar spirit of being able to beat them. However, unlike his grandfather Jonathan, Joseph is not above playing dirty (to a degree) to get a head up, but not to the point where it disrespects his opponent. He is the king of improvisation with his weapons ranging from hair, a coke bottle top, string from his scarf and his trademark Clackers.
His record for snap decisions means that Joseph is also deeply reckless, showing no qualms about throwing himself into a situation despite the odds against him. He occasionally also has some very dumb ideas - such as trying to sneak into a heavily fortified German army base in the Mexican desert by dressing in drag and offering the guards on duty tequila. (Just for the record, it didn't work.) He marries Suzie Q after surviving a life or death incident at the end of Part 2 because she treated his wounds and why not and partially because she called him cute after he got his breathing mask taken off. But it's this combination of recklessness and quick wit that gets him into tough situations. It also gets him out of it and allows him to be a versatile fighter, even though it does take his toll on him.
Joseph usually hates putting effort into things and likes to take life easy. As such, he is also the kind of person who has a loose understanding of what it is to follow rules. He does many things that get him into trouble and doesn't mind asking for help, but also he doesn't expect it to pull his ass out of trouble.
Despite this, Joseph is also an honourable kind of person. The person he fears most is his Nanna Erina, who he reveres and respects to the point that when his shirt that was a gift from her got stained during a plane crash, he was more concerned about what Nanna Erina would say rather than the plane crashing. He later learns to fear and revere Lisa Lisa in the same manner, and that is before he knew she was his mother.
He respects people for being people, as he was very friendly toward Smokey Brown and defended him against both the police and a racist man in a restaurant despite Smokey first attempting to steal his wallet when they met. He's also able to assess people relatively quickly as to whether they're threats, friendly or whatever else. Joseph has respect for those who follow a code of honour or way of the warrior, as is the case when he recognises that Wammu did not leave Caesar's blood bubble with his piercing intact out of pity, but rather for the fact that Caesar fought with honour. He offers Wammu the same sort of honour on his demise. It's very clear that Joseph has a set of morals, and he believes in doing the right thing in the end - even if his ways of getting there are unusual.
Joseph in Part 3 at the age of 67 largely retains the same qualities, yet as time went on he became more responsible and becomes more of a leader. His cleverness allowed him to become a big shot New York realtor, which is a business loaded with assessing risks and making decisions. He still occasionally makes horrible decisions due to his impulsive, such as cheating on Suzie Q with Tomoko Higashikata and telling Avdol to get Jotaro out of his cell at the beginning of Part 3 by whatever means necessary.
He's acutely aware of all the people that allowed him to live a comfortable life. The fact he's allowed his grandmother, uncle and mother to live nice long lives gives him great comfort in his old age that he broke the "Joestar curse" that took his grandfather and father early in life. He loves his daughter more than anything and will do anything to make sure he's okay, which is why he still lets her act like a teenage daddy's girl around him despite being 45 years old. Joseph is upset that a Japanese man stole his daughter away and holds some prejudices against the Japanese for this reason - though this largely melts away as Part 3 progresses.
This is why when his life and the life of his family is threatened by the presence of DIO, Joseph is the one who takes the initiative to stop him and rounds up the rest of the team. It is very clear that the death of Caesar Zeppeli leaves a lasting impact on him even in his old age, because when Joseph accidentally touched a nerve regarding family - Caesar walked into his death against Wammu. Family means a lot more to Joseph and he recognises the need to surround yourself with good people to fight against the odds. He recognises that danger plagues his family and he is very much willing to traverse the earth to protect them. He's not interested in keeping the threat at bay, he wants to destroy it completely - which is why he was reluctant to let other people get involved with what was a Joestar problem. Yet Joseph is someone who understand the convictions hold and know that sometimes, you just gotta let them go on a dangerous journey with you.
In the great road trip that is Stardust Crusaders, Joseph takes the position of Team Dad. He's in charge of collecting knowledge and advancing their journey, taking the job of planning and logistics with Avdol. He is very careful to try and avoid the assault of Dio's followers and other Stand users. Yet he doesn't coddle the members of his team, because he recognises that all of them have made the decision to come with him to Egypt. Joseph now wants to have more of the upper hand against his opponents through planning, which is something he picked up from an old friend. This shows on a number of occasions, but most prominently where he holds off on killing Enya Gail so that he could get information on what Dio's Stand actually was - and appealing to her to tell him when she was the verge of dying.
Yet despite his forward planning and position of experience, he is still one of the hot headed members of the group alongside Polnareff. Not to mention he still has the greatest ability to bullshit in the entire group.

Joseph's relationship with his grandson is rather rocky at the beginning of Part 3. Jotaro has a perpetual attitude problem and Joseph is not happy with his grandson disrespecting his mother every day and making her worry. However, they start to gain a mutual understanding and respect when they both decide to work together to save Holly's life. As the series progresses, they gain a mutual respect and understanding of each other's skills and strengths. When The Lovers enters Joseph's brain and whatever damage is done to Steely Dan is mirrored on Joseph, Jotaro follows and keeps tabs on Steely Dan to make sure he doesn't do anything funny to hurt his grandfather more. Jotaro does a number of humiliating things to make sure Joseph stays safe, buying Joseph, Kakyoin and Polnareff time to find a solution.
With regards to Avdol, Kakyoin and Polnareff - he treats them all as comrades in arms and trusts them with his life. Avdol and Joseph were first united under the common threat of Dio and it was Avdol who told him about Stands and how to cure Holly in the first place. Joseph was the one who made arrangements to make sure Avdol recovered in peace, as he recognises that the group needs his skills and knowledge. Though Kakyoin and Polnareff were directly under DIO's influence through the flesh bud that he had implanted in them, he gave them the chance to join them to redeem themselves for attacking the group initially. He treats everyone as equals and is just the cool dad like that.
At the end of the day, what he wants to see the most is DIO eliminated. He undertakes the journey that he does, with all the risks it entails to ensure that his family has a future to look forward to. As someone who has seen too many lives taken before their time, it is of paramount importance that he completes his journey. He's lived a full life and wants to make sure others that he cares about can do the same.
Abilities/Powers:
- Ripple Technique
A power that he keeps from Part 2 - Joseph is proficient in the use of the Ripple. Ripple users are rare - Joseph's father is unable to use the Ripple, but his mother and Joseph himself are able to use it.
It is an ancient martial art that utilises an energy similar to that of the sun that is controlled through breathing. It is very similar to the real life Chinese concept of Qi.
Conductivity is one of the key concepts of the Ripple, and most of its attacks/uses are based around increasing or decreasing Ripple conductivity as needed. In perhaps what is the most famous example, Will A Zeppeli in Part 1: Phantom Blood punched a frog sitting on a rock to a horrified Jonathan Joestar and Erina Pendleton. Through the power of the Ripple, Zeppeli was able to conduct the Ripple through the frog leaving it unharmed but completely decimating the rock underneath.
Because the Ripple is essentially a form of energy, its uses are varied. Ripple users can use the tension between Ripple energy and an object to scale walls, walk on water etc. One of Lisa Lisa's famous trials was the "Hell Climb Pillar", a room where one had to scale a massive pillar using only the Ripple while everything was drenched in oil. Ripple energy can also be used defensively to repel harmful objects or heal bodies.
Most objects can be infused with the Ripple, leading to the variety of things that people have used to channel it (bubbles, clackers, scarfs, wine etc). Ripple users can control the bodies of living beings by using the Ripple by physical contact - Joseph controlled a pigeon through the use of the Ripple while Caesar used it to control the movements of a woman in the same fight.
Ripple energy cannot harm its user meaning it cannot be used against itself, so it can be conducted around the user's body freely. It is one of the few effective methods of dealing with Zombies/Vampires in Jojo's Bizarre Adventures. In Part 3, Joseph uses the Ripple to dissolve the flesh buds that DIO uses to control people.
In his youth, Joseph often infused objects with Ripple energy with his special attack being Ripple infused Clackers. He often would use string to create traps around his enemies and use it to conduct the Ripple through.
Joseph largely forgoes infusing objects with the Ripple in his old age and instead opts to infuse his punches, elbow strikes and chops to deal damage.
- Stand, Hermit Purple
As part of Dio coming into contact into the Stand producing arrow with Jonathan Joestar's body, a manifestation of Joseph's spirit now appears to "stand" by him in combat. The concept of Stands is several decades in the making so a full explanation of Stands and its rules are on the JoJo Wikia. However, the general idea is that a Stand is an image based in energy similar to the Ripple, but each Stand is different and has different abilities according to the spirit of the user. It is only visible to other Stand users, but their effects are felt in the area - for example, Magician's Red can generate flames that aren't visible but the surrounding area feels hot. A Stand is controlled by the fighting spirit of its user, so those who do not have the sufficient spirit to do so can suffer negative effects and can die from the Stand consuming the body of its user.
Joseph's stand is Hermit Purple, representing The Hermit in the tarot major arcana. It manifests as purple thorns curling around his arms. Here is a picture of how it looks!
Hermit Purple is a defensive orientated stand. It is able to conduct the Ripple, allowing Joseph to use his Ripple techniques in conjunction with it. In combat, it is able to wrap around other Stands in a limited area to deal damage with its thorns. Joseph is seen using it as a grappling hook to swing between locations, allowing him to use his Secret Technique better. In the fighting game All Star Battle, Hermit Purple's strength is enough to toss weighty objects towards foes.
The strengths of Hermit Purple comes from that it gives Joseph considerable psychic/precognitive powers. By destroying a camera, Joseph can generate Psychic Photographs which can reveal the location of the intended target and what they are doing in that moment.
Hermit Purple becomes more versatile when in contact with a TV or any device with a screen. By quickly changing channels, Hermit Purple can create an audible message of what Joseph wants to know. It can also read people's minds when connected to a TV. If Joseph concentrates, he can have a live video feed into a location or object or person using a TV - this was the case when The Lovers stand entered his brain and planted one of Dio's flesh buds deep in it. Hermit Purple allowed him to broadcast where The Lovers was in his brain so that Kakyoin and Polnareff could see exactly what they were doing.
Other uses include being able to make maps capable of tracking moving subjects and objects of interest. Joseph uses Hermit Purple to create a map of the local area using dust in one notable incident in trying to fight The Empress. It allowed him to find a barrel of coal tar that allowed him to immobilise the Stand and gave him the heads up.
In game, Joseph will probably only be able to see characters in Haven. He won't be able to see characters from their own worlds or his own, as his stand isn't that powerful. (though there are other stands that are capable of such) Since Hermit Purple's rooted in the present and near future, he won't be able to see anyone in past points in time either.
Joseph would probably able to use the cellphone screen to project images using Hermit Purple, though he would not be able to send it to the network.
His maps using sand or dust would be able to circumvent the ban on writing as they are purely pictorial in nature, but if any of this is problematic, I'll happily change it.
- Prosthetic Hand
Having lost his hand in the final battle against Kars, Joseph now has a prosthetic hand made of metal. Thanks to the superior quality of the German medicine that manufactured it, it moves and works just like a real hand would. He wears vambraces and gloves near constantly to hide it. It can conduct the Ripple but Joseph is shown favouring his other (non-prosthetic) hand to generate it. A running gag in the series is that it constantly gets battered yet reappears whole without any question.
- Joestar blood
In the wider scheme of things, Joseph is a member of the Joestar family. This is indicated by the star shaped birthmark on his back, near his neck. Anything that affects the Joestar family line as a whole, will also affect him. The reason why he has a Stand in the first place is because Dio, while fused with Jonathan Joestar's body received a Stand. All of Jonathan's descendants were also granted the ability to use a Stand as a result.
- Secret Technique
A Joestar family technique that is normally utilised as a last resort - Joseph has used this a number of times throughout his life and is a master at it. It usually gives him enough time to formulate a plan and catch his breath. Using this technique can usually give him the upper hand.
(This secret technique is known as running away as fast as you can.)
- Built as fuck
Possibly due to the side effect of the Ripple, but despite being in his sixties during the time of Stardust Crusaders, Joseph is still able to fight and has the endurance of someone of a much younger age. He is still pretty athletic, showing that he can run on minimum sleep and still kick ass. He is able to take blows with no problem, he can still run long distances and do things that most sixty year olds can't. His punches, elbow drops and kicks hurt and can cause considerable damage.
- Posing
Everyone in this series has the ability to pose ridiculously, even while doing seemingly mundane things like have a conversation in a cafe. In his old age, he can still pose like the rest of them and isn't being beaten by anybody younger than him in this posing game.
Items/Weapons:
- One 30000 Yen Polaroid Camera
- A folding photo frame with two photos - Joseph, Suzie Q, Holly and Jotaro in one and Lisa Lisa, Speedwagon, Erina and a younger Joseph and Suzie Q in the other.
- His walkman with a cassette tape in it.
Sample Entry:
Oho!
[ Joseph finally manages to get the device working and the serious face that he was holding turns into a small smile. He taps the screen just once more to make sure it's broadcasting properly, then clears his throat. ]
My name's Joseph Joestar and I need to get out of here!
[ The levity of what he was saying contrasted with his features, which turned serious once again. ]
This is a serious plea.
[ He pauses. It's very clear that it's difficult for Joseph to express this so publicly. ]
My daughter is very sick. She could die unless I...
[ Joseph bites his lip and looks away, like he's hesitating to explain his daughter's conditions who don't understand. It's his problem, nobody else's. He doesn't want to drag anyone else into it. ]
Well, there's only one cure for a disease as rare as hers and we have 50 days to get it back to her. It's found in Egypt and I was on a quest to get it with my grandson and our friends. We ran into a few troubles along the way [ okay this is a gross underestimation considering the roundabout way they took to get to egypt, thanks dio ] and we were close to Egypt. But now --
[ One of his hands clenches into a fist and he gestures around his area with his free one. ]
I'm here. Not helping my daughter. My wife is going to be worried if I'm gone for too long, because she's going to think I'm slacking off - or worse, cheating on her!
[ He takes a deep breath and tries to calm himself down. But it's not working, because the next moment Joseph is putting his hands to head and looking down. ]
I'm an old man, I don't have much longer but my daughter deserves to live to see her son graduate from high school. Someone... please tell me how to get to Egypt as fast as I can.
[ After a long pause, Joseph says one last sentence. ]
Or at the very least, how to tell my wife I love her.
[ The feed clicks off. ]
Sample Entry Two:
He's trying not to think about the worst.
Joseph's never really thought about the worst option in a long time. He lived his life outwitting and outdodging everything that life threw at him. Even when Holly started being affected by her stand,
The fact that he can't actually go to Egypt from here is something he doesn't want to consider too deeply. He's desperately trying not to let himself be consumed by the thoughts of the fact that someone he deeply cares for is going to die on his watch if he doesn't get a move on.
"Holly." murmured Joseph as he kicked a stone from the path under him. Just saying her name pained him. He takes off his hat and runs a hand through his hair, sighing heavily. It would put his mind at ease if he could at least call Suzie, and ask her how Holly was. That would put him in a better state of mind.
Wait a minute, what was he talking about?
He's Joseph Joestar.
He didn't survive this long against a whole host of horrible things by hoping for something to put him in a better state of mind. Joseph grabs the wrist of his prosthetic hand and double checks it is firmly in place.
It still is. It was a subconscious habit he picked up after the whole incident with Kars. The fact that he had the rest of him was due to the acts of some very brave people who relied on him.
Because he's a Joestar.
Because he's Jojo.
He adjusts his hat and with a renewed sense of being. There hasn't been a situation he's never escaped from before, why should this one be different?
